Cold and flu season are just around the corner, but that doesn’t mean you have to partake in that usual fall trend. Beat the common cold before it even happens by boosting your immune system. Instead of busting out the Kleenex and blankets, try adding these seven super foods to your diet.
They might be smaller than most fruits, but kiwis contain a multitude of vitamins that are great in preventing the common cold. One kiwi contains enough vitamin C, D, B6, B12, K, and zinc to boost your immune system.
Orange juice always seems to be a main component of one’s diet when a cold hits, but eat some before the sniffles to make sure they never happen. A healthy dose of Vitamin C is the best way to fight, before or during, a cold.
Berries are great antioxidants, whether raspberries, strawberries, blueberries, or blackberries. What’s even better? Eating all four at once. Antioxidants are great for giving an added boost to your immune system. Blueberries are actually known for having the most antioxidants compared to other fruits.

We’re usually told Vitamin C is the best bet against the cold, but studies show that zinc actually packs a pretty big punch. Studies have shown that adults who took zinc lozenges during a cold were alleviated of symptoms. Thanks to zinc, symptoms of the common cold were, on average, shortened by a day.
While zinc lozenges are available, get your dose naturally by eating oysters – a great source of this vitamin. But make sure they’re not raw – raw shellfish could actually lead to more sickness than not.
5. Leafy Greens
The darker the green, the better it is for you. If you’re trying to build up your defences against the cold, grab for some arugula or kale. Those two leafy greens contain a lot more nutrients than iceberg lettuce.
They’re even great during a cold because they help alleviate cold symptoms such as: chest congestion, sniffles, and coughs.
6. Brazil Nuts
Nuts may be a great way to great protein, but these nuts are great for getting selenium. Selenium is a mineral that helps your immune system function properly. It also helps protect against infection and colds. But don’t start gorging on these nuts just yet. Your body only requires a bit of selenium – and one nut contains a full day’s dosage!
7. Green Tea
Just like berries, green tea is filled with a lot of antioxidants. Drinking three to five cups a day will help boost your immune system and strengthen it against colds.
