If you were to ask anyone what their ultimate goal was in life, some would say fame, others fortune, but when it comes down to it, we are all looking for one thing and that is to be happy. I do not mean the fleeting happiness that comes with buying a new purse or pay raise but the happiness that comes from within and exudes outwards. While these tips below may not lead to that ultimate happiness, it is a step towards the right direction. Happiness is not something that happens in a day, it is a lifelong journey. We cannot simply follow a set of rules to attain it but they can be a guide to find our own happiness.
Smile more, like physically force yourself.
Sometimes this may be hard, especially if we’ve had a rough day, or week, or month but regardless, we should all make an effort to smile more. Just this simple act of contracting your facial muscles to form a smile will help to make you feel better. Practice smiling in the mirror, smile to yourself, and to others because smiling is a gift. So give yourself a gift and give it to others and watch it multiply.
Stop burning bridges.
We all have people that have wronged us in one way or another and we need to learn to forgive more. Too often, we hold on to anger towards people and that is not the way to achieve happiness. Don’t let others control you. When you are angry towards someone, you are letting them control your emotions. Be the master of your own emotions. Choose to forgive; choose to be happy.
Let it go (cue frozen song) but really, let it go.
Things may have happened that have resulted in unhappiness but the past is the past and nothing you do now can change that. If it’s not something you can change, why do you need to constantly be putting energy into remembering the bad times? Let go of the negative emotions but remember to learn from the experience.
Find your passion and pursue it.
Life is about risks and although it may be scary to try something new, do it. If you don’t think you have something that you’re truly passionate about, keep trying new things. Search in order to discover what makes you feel whole.
Do what makes you feel good.
Dance, paint, create, explore, travel, eat, sleep, have sex etc. etc. If it makes you feel good, why skimp out? As long as you’re not hurting someone else in the process, do what feels good to you how ever much you want. Do you, boo.
Realize that money can’t buy happiness.
Money can buy things that make you happy, but again this is all temporary. The sooner you realize this, the sooner you will be able to focus on real things that bring happiness, like love, friends, and family. Mo’ money mo’ problems.
Stop spending frivolously.
Materialistic items may make you feel better after a hard day at work but really think about the consequences. Be smart and spend what you can afford with your own money (not credit). Be financially responsible so you can be financially stable. You will worry less when you know where your next meal is coming from and be happier for it.
Talk to someone.
If you are constantly feeling down it could be something deeper. It could be a hormone imbalance or mental illness. If you constantly feel like nothing helps alleviate the feelings of sadness and despair, talk to someone about it. There are people that can help and it is nothing to be ashamed of.
