It seems that the aesthetic most American girls strive for is the ever elusive thin Amazon goddess which is propogated by the media. One look at all of the editorial prints in magazines and billboards will prove us right. It’s also a well-known fact that most models are in fact thinner than the average girl. Although many designers and influencers have started to attempt to change this ever “acceptable” image by using more naturally shaped models and normal everyday women, who knows how long it’ll take before the skinny image is banished for good.
But here’s the lowdown, being skinny isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be. There are just as many downsides to it as there is to be not skinny.
1. You’re constantly on the search for food.
You may have a metabolism that many would sacrifice their newborn for, but the cost of it would never let you even fund a newborn. The minute you finish a full meal, you’re already anxious about the next time you’re going to be able to eat again. Will there be a break during work to grab food? Is that subway ride going to overlap with the next time your stomach rumbles?
2. But people still tell you to eat a hamburger.
Why is it socially acceptable to tell skinny girls to eat more when it’s rude to tell a heavier set girl that she’s fat? Both comments are judgemental and you have no idea what’s going on in their lives. Just because someone is skinny doesn’t mean that they don’t eat.
3. Groceries > Shopping
You spend more money on food than you do on clothes. Feeding that toilet bowl of a stomach is costly. You could probably eat enough for 4 people in one meal. Those side jobs aren’t just to save up for the cute bag that’s coming out next month, it’s to afford next month’s grocery bill.
4. But when you’re not in the mood to eat, you have anorexia.
Apparently it’s okay for others to not have an appetite but when you don’t it’s as if you have anorexia plastered all over your face.
5. All of your plans have to involve food.
You have to eat, but you have to hang out with your friends, so why not kill two birds with one stone? Not to mention you’ll save money this way because then you won’t have to go back home and eat/buy more food afterwards.
6. It’s difficult finding clothes that fit your proportions.
The average size is not your size. So when you’re of average height looking for clothes and all of them just fall off of your body, that’s not cool. I’ve had enough of my hardships trying to search for jeans in my size in the waist but then end up with them being too short in length. Or the opposite, where I can find a size that is long enough for my height, but the waist size is way too big. Why can’t I just be normal sized?!
7. Strapless anything just doesn’t work.
Forget not being able to wear pants, that’s what skirts are for right? But when you can’t wear a top… That’s another story. You’re so flat that the walls are jealous. With nothing to support your shirt, strapless tops just fall staight off of your torso and slide to the floor like slime on a wall.
8. There’s a difference between being skinny and fit.
Just because you’re skinny does not mean you’re fit. The same goes the other way as well. Just because you’re fit does not mean that you’re skinny. So stop getting the 2 mixed up.
9. Being blown away by the wind.
This is a very real problem. It’s not a joke. On days where the roaring wind is strong enough to blow over trees and power lines I fear for my life. It would be like living in a real life re-enactment of Twister. And yes it has happened to me before already.
10. Being told that its unfair that you’re skinny.
K please, because I was able to ask Mother Nature for things in the womb. Please stop judging me based on the way that I look.
11. Eating anything and everything to gain weight.
But it just doesn’t work. Living on a diet of cupcakes and sodas would be a dream, if only you didn’t feel like throwing up and sick all the time. Gaining weight would most likely be the best thing to ever happen to you because then you’d finally be able to shop in the adult section of stores!
12. People constantly compare their your wrist size to theirs.
Yes please, just yank at my wrists whenever you please. Don’t even bother asking I’m too used to it happening.
13. Bracelets and belts are the bain of your existence.
You pass on the bangles in jewelry stores because you know that they’ll just fall off anyways. And that cute belt? Looks like you’ll have to go home and punch a couple more holes into it to make it fit.
14. Watches also hate you.
Just when you thought that removing all of the links from your watch would make it fit your wrist, you realize that it doesn’t. It. Still. Slides. Off.
15. Being forced to sit in the middle of the back of the car.
Because you’re so skinny you won’t even notice being squished by people on either side anyways.
16. You never really know what it’s like to not feel cold.
Sure, there might not be an ounce of fat on your body, but feeling cold is an eternal problem you have to deal with.
17. People never let you sit on them.
You want to cuddle on the lap of that cute guy over there? Make sure that your razor sharp butt bones aren’t digging into his thighs first. Oh they do? Then nevermind.
18. Roller coasters are literally your one stop ticket to death.
While your friends are sticking their hands up in the air and having a blast, you’re desperately trying to push the safety bar down lower onto your lap. Most people try to leave some space to float up, but you know that with that space you’d quite actually slip over the bar and fall off the ride and to your imminent death.
19. Getting asked if you model.
Do you have to model just because you’re skinny? No. And all models have to be skinny? Nope.
20. Having your period = losing 20% of your body weight.
Most people dread their periods because of their hormonal changes. You hate it because it completely undoes everything that you’ve done to try and gain weight.
21. You’re not allowed to donate blood.
Doctors seem to understand that losing that much blood at once is not healthy. So why doesn’t Mother Nature?
